PSA: Children w/ Special Needs Are Affected by Verbal Abuse
As a parent of a child with special needs, I feel compelled to share a recent incident that disturbed me deeply.
Over the weekend, I overheard a conversation between two individuals, one of whom works with children with special needs. During the conversation, the topic of someone else yelling and cursing at these children arose. I want to emphasize the importance of recognizing the impact of verbal abuse on individuals, regardless of their special needs or differences.
When I came upon the conversation already in progress, I overheard someone questioning the appropriateness of yelling and cursing at children with special needs. Unfortunately, I didn’t hear the entire context, but obviously, I was alarmed by the mention of such behavior. The person who works with these children reassured me that they had corrected their coworker, which was great. Unfortunately, they then went on to suggest that these children are less affected by such treatment compared to others.
As a parent of a child with special needs, I felt compelled to intervene and offer a different perspective. I joined the conversation and pointed out that anyone, regardless of their differences, is affected by verbal abuse. It is a basic truth that applies to all human beings. Although individuals with special needs might not express their emotions or reactions the same way as others, it doesn’t mean they are immune to the impact of verbal abuse.
We must recognize that all individuals, including those with special needs, are profoundly affected when yelled at or cursed. Verbal abuse affects the emotional well-being of human beings, regardless of their specific challenges or capabilities.
Please recognize that people are people.
Children with special needs are particularly vulnerable and can be significantly impacted by verbal abuse. It is disheartening that I have to state the obvious, but it is crucial to reaffirm that anyone subjected to verbal abuse is affected by it.
I hope this prompts you to reflect on your own way of showing up in the world. Let’s practice respect, kindness, empathy, and compassion to create an inclusive environment that nurtures the well-being of all individuals, regardless of their unique circumstances.
