Morning Rituals

With all the hubbub of 2 historical hurricanes hitting my home islands in the past few weeks I noticed that I’ve been having a hard time getting out the gate.

Rest is great.

Rest is necessary.

Yet “resting” most of my day was more a sign of retreat from reality and depression attempting to creep in that my need for actual physical replenishment (although I could go to bed earlier *yawn*).

So this week I’ve been getting up bright and early (for me) and have restarted my morning rituals that I began so successfully last year.

Q: What is a ritual?
A: An established or prescribed procedure

Often times ritual can be connected to religion but in this case, I mean more of an intentional process I have to start my morning and set the atmosphere/energy of the day in the direction that I desire. This is in contrast to the years of an UNINTENTIONAL process that I observed of hitting the snooze button several times, then rushing to the restroom, rushing to dress, rushing to scarf down some breakfast, while I haphazardly rushed to work. Think about it … if you start your day that way how do you expect the remainder of the day to flow any differently?

So what does my weekday morning ritual entail? I …

1. Wake up at 6 am
2. Have myself and my son ready, and him on the bus by 7:45 am
3. Make some tea
3a. Stop and write a quick post about morning rituals (lol)
4. Meditate & Journal
5. Do a few minutes of yoga and build up to longer times

And that’s it.

I’m going to do this with a purpose for the next few weeks and see what happens. If last year is any indication I cannot WAIT for the positive results. I’m also planning on restarting my nightly detox baths for a while as well, to reset after all the stress of these hurricanes and life in general.

I encourage you to do something similar with your mornings.

Do you already have a morning ritual? Let me know in the comments below.
